Q&A by Jessica Smith Roebuck
Neal Smith grew up in Picayune in Pearl River County and has lived in Ohio for 27 years. As the chief executive officer and executive secretary for the American Jersey Cattle Association, Smith has been able to stay connected to the reason he joined 4-H as a child—his love of dairy cattle. He first joined 4-H because he wanted to show his Jersey calf at the Pearl River County Fair.
Q: What 4-H projects did you do? Any activities that were your favorites?
Dairy cattle judging has been very important to dairy farmers and dairy cattle breeders for years. The goal is to have show-winning cows with excellent type conformation. It is difficult to determine the dollar value of type, but cows and bulls in high demand are usually ones with excellent milk production and good type.
Public speaking is exciting and rewarding. It’s a chance for you to share a message you feel passionate about.
Do you love Jeopardy? Are you passionate about the dairy industry? Do you enjoy competing with your friends? Then the 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl is the contest for you!

Through the evaluation of dairy products, you will develop a greater understanding of and appreciation for high-quality dairy products. You will become a wise and economical shopper for dairy products, and, after you graduate from high school, you may be able to continue your judging activities in college.
