What’s the 4-H Poultry Chain Project all about?

The 4-H Poultry Chain Project is a way for 4-H’ers to learn how to produce and manage poultry. Participants also will gain a better understanding of proper care and biosecurity.

What is a record book and why is it important?

A record book is a way for you to keep track of everything that goes on in your project. It is a fun way for you to learn about your project. With your record book, you can set goals for your project, record information, keep track of expenses, and more!

Former 4-H’er serves as Miss Hospitality

When Emma Grace McGrew became Mississippi’s 2017 Miss Hospitality, a year of exciting experiences awaited the former Prentiss County 4-H’er and self-proclaimed country girl.

“I had never been in a pageant before, but I knew Miss Booneville got to read stories to kindergartners and cut the ribbon when a new business opened. I love my town and decided to compete,” McGrew explains.

Choosing the Right Breed for Your Backyard Flock

After careful thought, you have decided you are ready to acquire a small flock of backyard chickens. So, now what? If you live inside city limits, first check with your municipality to make sure poultry are allowed where you live. Some locations have “no livestock” clauses that will ban you from keeping poultry. Even if the city allows chickens, make sure that your subdivision or homeowners’ association does not impose a ban on keeping chickens.

The Avian Embryo

The earliest stages of a bird in its egg are amazing and exciting. In only three weeks, a small clump of cells that do not seem to resemble any animal species changes into an active, newly hatched chick. A study of this change is educational and interesting and gives us insight into how humans are formed.

4-H Poultry Judging

Each 4-H Poultry Judging Contest has four classes on consumer information, the grading of exterior eggshell factors, broken-out eggs, and ready-to-cook poultry. The highest total score for the contest is 500 points. The four classes are:
