The two most common methods of preserving vegetables are freezing and canning. Freezing keeps the food so cold that microorganisms cannot grow and enzyme activity is slowed down. When you can vegetables, you put them in a jar and heat them. They must be heated enough to kill microorganisms that cause spoilage, and the jar must be sealed to keep microorganisms and air out. Canning requires more work than freezing but is more economical.
This publication gives information on freezing only. Here are some things you will learn:
The standard 4-H Display Box is a storage unit for pinned insects, a unique display case and, if properly built and outfitted, a source of protection for collected specimens. The sturdy construction of the box protects the collection when you carry it from place to place.
The Mississippi 4-H Junior Master Gardener® program is a 4-H youth gardening project that offers horticultural and environmental science education as well as life-skills development through fun and creative activities.
It is modeled after the highly successful Master Gardener program and is designed to help young people become good gardeners and good citizens so they can make positive contributions to their communities, schools, and families.
4-H is an informal, practical, learn-by-doing educational program for rural and urban young people ages 5 to 19 from all racial, cultural, economic, and social backgrounds. 4-H is an educational program for young people supported by Mississippi State University Extension.
What is it? This is the first question most people ask when they encounter a new kind of animal. Being able to identify an animal is the first step in learning about that animal. Your backyard is home to hundreds of different species of interesting and unusual animals, and most of these animals are insects. Insects affect our lives in many ways. Some insects are pests and some are beneficial, but most insects are neither good nor bad—they are just little animals.
Freezing is an easy way to preserve foods. It preserves food by stopping the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast.
Correctly frozen foods maintain excellent color, flavor, texture, and food value. Frozen berries and fruits are delicious as snacks or in other dishes.
Here are some things you will learn in this project:
Insects are our most abundant form of wildlife. There are more species of insects than there are species of all other animals and plants combined! Your backyard is inhabited by hundreds of species of insects, each with its own unique and interesting biology and habit.
